	The firm provided full architectural and interior services for the brand’s flagship store in Saint Barthelemy. This included creating custom furniture and displays for jewelry, clothing and other apparatus - in collaboration with the client’s large team of in-house traditional craftsmen.

Inspired by the store’s marine surroundings, tables and chairs posed on wavy, braided-rope bound legs were conceived in 3D; Planters and faceted tables echoed the brand’s penchance for incorporating bijoux in their ready-to-wear creations. Full-size drawings and material tests were sent back and forth from our collaborators in Italy and the office in Tribeca until the desired effect was acheived.

	Our site for a NYC ferry terminal/food&#38;nbsp; market is situated upon a FEMA flood
plain. During Hurricane Sandy, the site was inundated with 3-6 feet of water.&#38;nbsp; The Flood Market proposes an sectional approach to designing public space over
water.

Depicted above are scenes from flooding in my hometown of Wuhan, China. 
Unlike the threat of long-term ocean levels, event-based flooding is seen as a minor inconvenience, sometimes even a holiday to be celebrated. It is in this spirit that the Flooding Plains are made to be flood-proof and even occupiable in cases of mild flooding.

	

The entire walkable site is covered with galvanized steel grates and the building architecture is casted concrete - materials that are rated flood-proof and do not need to bereplaced after a flood event. Enclosed market programs are located above the floodline sectionally, and the
ground place is made obstacle free to facilitate movement even when under a modest amount of water.

	The Soundview Peninsula community does not have walking access to a subway line. In the case of a flood, an annual occurence, the community would be able to step up on the terminal roofs as an emergency evacuation dock.


The main architecture of the ferry terminal consists of an open air market on the ground floor, with enclosed kitchens and dining above. The elevational difference protects the interior from water damage and the need for replacement every hurricane season.

As part of the YSoA’s first urban workshop in the area, we worked with local contributors to create “The Urban Atlas”, a wayfinding document of the city’s current and past urban conditions.

	
	The first planned suburb outside of city fortifications, Haga was first defined by its natural
surroundings and the threat of invasion. In groups of four, we studied and researched
districts in Gothenburg to aid the city in positioning a stance for or against developments
in the area.

	The neighborhood of Haga is at once a tourist destination as well as a highly-desired
residential area. It endured periods of demolition and reconstruction, most recently mass
demolition and rehabilitation efforts in the late 1970s. The versatile urban fabric of this
small parish absorbs private interests around its perimeters, vibrant commercial activity
across its center, and community-oriented housing within its block interiors.
	In the following large-scale urban studies, we studied maps from the 16th century to present day to determine the formal strategies that created this much-loved district.&#38;nbsp;

We discovered a forgotten canal approach that formed the road to Skansen Kronen, a mountain watch tower, and unparcelled further the inflections that the castle moat, canals, and other waterways may have contributed to in present-day Haga.&#38;nbsp;

Part of the appeal of living in Haga, apart from its proximity to city center and higher learning institutions, lay in the rich interior life of inner block courtyards unique to the area. Locals would often refer to them automatically as possessing a certain “
je ne sais quoi” central to the overall spirit of the storied district.
Almost by chance, we started counting the amount of unique doorways to these residential courtyard buildings - which led to the realization that Haga’s most characteristic courtyard communities shared one strong correlation: the ratio of interior doorways to street openings.

	When occupants could only enter their buildings through the interior courtyard, it resulted in a fully communal courtyard experience. Once occupants could enter from outside, even if only a few instances existed in a block, the part of the courtyard that neighbored their building would become a more private backyard that could be fenced off to access.&#38;nbsp;
	Using this method, we successfully identified the three distinct neighborhoods of Haga that locals typically associate as having separate, if hard to describe, personalities - with East Haga having the most communal, sought after courtyard communities.&#38;nbsp;

	Part of our research also proposed a second look at the possibility of integrating larger-scale entities into the low-rise, high density fabric of Haga without disrupting existing patterns of habitation. We used the University of Gothenburg as a precedent for analysis - noting that it was halfway prototypically “Haga”, and halfway a megablock.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 


	Our conclusion and recommendation to members of the Gothenburg community was that while there was possibility for successful integration, it would have to come in the form of multiple buildings and forsake the mainstream idea of maximizing street frontage. By focusing activity on the block interior, the proprietary activity density that Haga blocks enjoy would continue to propegate.&#38;nbsp;

Tasked with existing casework-based precedent, we created a new utility cruciform that would divide and support all the functionalities of a compact two-family complex.&#38;nbsp;

By compacting structure, applicances, casework, and circulation all into a single cruciform shape, we were able to maximize livable space within a very compressed footprint. Built-in functionality simplifies the task of accounting for and maintaining amenities by Columbus House staff.

The finished home - a single occupancy studio and two bedroom family unit - wraps around the utility cruciform. By placing all program on the interior walls, all exterior walls are left open and free to provide the maximum amount of light and views out to the neighborhood.

The single occupant of the ground floor studio enjoys a gracious L-shaped configuration that has windows facing 3 sides. A back patio accessible to the studio extends the living quarters outwards in warmer months for entertaining.

Having joined the project after a successful ULURP - my responsibilities included architectural design and development of all residential floors in this mixed-use high-end rental and class A office tower.&#38;nbsp;
The Phase I tower of this full-block development comprises of 250+ rental units and will be the tallest all-electric building in the borough.&#38;nbsp;

“小陈忙着跟别人谈呢，我们帮她把把关...这样的她不会感兴趣的。” “Mrs. Chen is busy with someone else, we can help her make this decision ... (after listening to description) she won’t be interested in your kid.”

These are excerpts taken from conversations at the weekend “marriage market” that we visited in Shanghai. These marriage markets are a rare instance of self-perpetuated, mass gatherings allowed by the government for parents of single children. Despite the walls of formatted flyers, marriage markets are less about actually hitching unwilling children up and more about a lost sense of close-knit community. People speak to each other freely about topics and people close to their hearts. Many come simply to see other parents, friends now, through weekly contact throughout the years.“Cities with Marriage Markets are Cities with Hope”, as one article put it. It is this program that I hoped to bring to our adaptive reuse site in Jing-an, a district full of elderly residents and a lack of public, social activity.&#38;nbsp;

The proposed program for the DHL building is a boutique hotel - one that houses the young singles that come to the site to stay, not only for the central location of Jing’an, but also to witness and participate at will in the spectacle of the new marriage market part on the ground floor.&#38;nbsp;

The singles building is, appropriately, a single-occupancy hotel in the vein of capsule hotels popular in Japan. It is also split by gender, and an existing parti wall, down the middle - a logic only visible from the backyard through the twin scissor fire stairs. The two stairs are mirrored, yet never meet, making for a visual metaphor for the marriage market below.
A separate wing of the hotel complex houses parents who have travelled from out of town to participate in the marriage market phenomemon. The open plan of this former aircraft factory makes for the perfect space to create a miniature covered “market” to house activity for the marriage market in less than favorable weather conditions.

	The park improves on the existing marriage market infrastructure by providing ancillary programs for parents to occupy themselves with. More seating and shade is provided through planting and by the overhang of the old factory. A 200 meter running path makes for a welcome addition to existing exercise equipment on-site.

The parents quarters are intentionally open at a tangent to the flow of the running path. This encourages locals to see within and interact with the visitors to their neighborhoods - involving them in the communal spirit of the marriage market

The marriage market is located away from the street, and maintains a closer connection with the dense residential area of its users. The singles hotel is then able to maintain a strong street presence, using the distance between street and existing building to create a different type of park: one of forced separation. The park uses fragments of previously existing buildings to separate the sexes, and frame views between incoming visitors.

The concept of forced separation with high visibility creates a means of serendipity at odds with the traditional methods of matchmaking. As this idea continues inside the hotel, sliding layers of walls, mirrored surfaces, and sheer curtains complicate, reflect, and misdirect this view of individuals across floors. Tearing down the old parti wall to create these views leaves a uncrossable expanse between occupants on either side, further strengthening the power of these intimate glances.

	The 2017 Jim Vlock Building Project made it possible, for the first time in the School’s history, for students to tackle the challenges of homelessness with a trusted community partner. We would design and build homes - for two families at a time - on behalf of Columbus House.

As a class-elected community representative, I attended ward meetings in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood. Many of the residents, understandibly, were concerned about the success of this first-time venture. Some cited poor experiences with neighbors who had been previously homeless. Others resented the university’s presence in their backyard. 




	

Given the exhibited apprehension at community board meetings,
it made sense to carry on the theme of
security from a previous cohabitation experiment;
the two homes share a courtyard from
which to enter both units - a central
outdoor space away from prying eyes.

My resulting individual scheme inherits a sense of mass and scale from the established New Haven housing type.

 By leveraging placement on a steep elevational drop, the home masquarades as a much larger multi-family home. The child’s bedroom on the second floor presents in the architectural language of a dormer window, further concealing the home’s true, unconventional layout.&#38;nbsp;
This individual house, presented at midterms, was selected and given as a precedent to another team of students to develop. That winning proposal was built over the summer, and completed September 2017.&#38;nbsp; 
Clients moved in shortly before Christmas of that year, and the house has been occupied since.&#38;nbsp;

	Our site in Kyoto is surrounded on three sides by a yet-to-be completed university campus by Inui Architects. By studying the KCUA campus planning concept and identifying key opportunities to bridge these “terraces” into the surrounding area, this project attempts to solve certain circulatory inadequacies in the project while exerting a stabilizing urban force into the rest of the neighborhood - restructuring streets, bridges, and providing a new canal bank “beach” to attract activity.&#38;nbsp;

	The resultant threshold building draws on a stable “bridging” vocabulary seen throughout Kyoto as a method for connecting college and town, across canals and roadways. The repeat use of bridging structures supplements the existing terrace configurations.

	As the first of many developments to come in this rapidly disappearing neighborhood, the campus center will be in the remarkable role of influencing and setting down new rules of spatial engagement for more than 12 blocks in dense, central Kyoto. As the image below depicts, the setting down of bridges and paths would first occur in isolation, before further development takes place.

In addition to further connecting the C-shaped campus to the community, the proposed bridge paths cross the canal beach in ways that would supplement the lack of effective cross-connections between branches of the university. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;


Bridges, as a form of infrastructure, take their shape according to amount of flow and type of traffic anticipated. As such, an organic spread of different bridges are selected and deployed , representative of the rich canal/bridge urbanism present in Kyoto proper.

The
Canon attempts to address the responsibility of the&#38;nbsp; library program to provide consituents with access to free, unbiased informaion. As the last leg of adult education and the first contact to literature for many children, the library must be programmed in a way that such access is not just possible, but unavoidable.&#38;nbsp;

The Gowanus Canon is named such due to the “canon” of knowledge found in its center. The main method of circulation is a spiralling ramp holding books that introduce patrons to every subject in the Dewey Decimal system - promising passive exposure even without active interest. Additional reading rooms can be accessed at points tangent to the ramp, whereby more holdings on the corresponding subject
matter can be found..
